Oakland California: Crimes Statistics, Arrest and Population Information

Oakland is a city that is located opposite San Francisco on the eastern banks of the San Francisco Bay in the state of California and can be found northwest of San Jose. The city was incorporated as the county seat of the Alameda county in 1873. It occupies a land area of 55.79 square miles and has a population density of 7,004 people per square mile.

The region was initially inhabited by Costanoan Indians until Spanish explorers landed in the late 18th century. The area became a part of the Rancho San Antonio which was a Spanish land grant established in 1820. It was in 1851 that a ferry service was set to San Francisco by Horace Carpentier. A townsite was acquired on the banks of the bay for the purpose, which was named Oakland for the oak trees which grew on the grassy plains of the region. Oakland was incorporated as a city in 1854 which later amalgamated with Brooklyn in 1872.

In 1950 itself, the population of Oakland was as high as 385,000. According to the records of the United States Census Bureau, there were about 390,724 people in the city of Oakland. The latest estimates state that the population is approximately 425,195, which is an 8.8 percent increase over the past seven years. There are more women than men in Oakland with 51.2 percent of the population comprising of females. Children below the age of 18 make up 20.4 percent of the population of Oakland. About 12.2 percent of the people here are senior citizens above the age of 65.

In the racial-ethnic demographic, about 27.3 percent of the population identifies as white alone while 26.7 percent of the people identify as Hispanic or Latino. Meanwhile, an approximate of 24.7 percent of the population in Oakland identify as African American, 0.8 percent identify as American Indian and Alaska Natives, 16 percent as Asian, 0.6 percent as Pacific Islanders and 6.6 percent as persons of mixed races. Further, there are 13,262 veterans in the city and 27.3 percent of the people in Oakland are foreign-born.


There are a total of 158,937 households in the city as recorded during the period from 2012 to 2016. Each household has an average of 2.55 members. About 40.3 percent of the people of Oakland speak a language other than English at home.

Among the residents older than 25 years, about 80.5 percent are high school graduates or have pursued further studies. Among them, 39.7 percent have attained bachelors' degrees or have sought higher education.

About 67.6 percent of the overall population above the age of 16 are in the civilian labor force. The median household income in the region is $ 57,778 and the per capita income of Oakland is $ 34,984. About 20 percent of the population is earning below the levels of poverty.

According to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) of the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the city of Oakland noted a total of 60,213 criminal incidences in 2016. Among them, there were 6,059 cases of violent crime, 85 cases of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 277 cases of rape, 3,076 cases of robbery and 2,621 cases of aggravated assault. There were also 23,952 cases of property crime, 2,900 cases of burglary, 14,153 cases of larceny-theft, 6,899 cases of motor vehicle theft and 191 cases of arson.

In 2015, there were a total of 61,417 criminal incidences reported in Oakland. Among them were 6,051 cases of violent crime, 85 cases of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 285 cases of rape, 3,290 cases of robbery, 2,391 cases of aggravated assault, 24,568 cases of property crime, 3,333 cases of burglary, 14,846 cases of larceny-theft, 6,389 cases of motor vehicle theft and 179 cases of arson.
