Police Officer Infidelity Rates and Reasons for Infidelity

Being a police officer will gain you a lot of respect from those around you. For starters, the fact that you are putting your life on the line to save others is commendable. It is an incredible profession, which comes with a lot of rewards.

However, according to a study conducted by Ashley Madison, a website facilitating affairs for married people under the slogan “Life is short. Have an affair”,  the results are shocking. In a survey using data on police officers from the Citizens Police Data Project, it was found that 4% of the women and 4% of the men using the website's services work in a law-enforcement position. It sounds quite surprising that people whose jobs are to maintain law and order are the ones indulging in this type of behavior. Yet, legal professions are regarded as some of the most stressful occupations in the United States. So let's look more closely at some of the reasons which could explain the infidelity rates of police officers.

Why do Cops have Affairs?

The question everyone has on their mind is why are there so many cheating police officers in the industry? Is there something about the job, which leads to an increase in infidelity rates of police officers?

Everyone wants to know about the police officer infidelity rate. Let’s explore the possible answers to this nagging question: why do cops have affairs?

Police Officer Infidelity Rate

Officers have a predisposition for adventure

A high percentage of law enforcement personnel choose the job because of their natural interest in adventures and adrenaline-fuelled situations. It means they are fundamentally undeterred by risks, leading them to infidelities of various kinds. The dread of potentially getting caught only adds to the thrill of the experience.

Cops lead Stressful Lives

The life of police officers is challenging, as they are in charge of maintaining law and order in their area of jurisdiction, and oftentimes have to put themselves in danger to protect the civilians around them.

Even when police officers go off-duty, it doesn’t mean they switch off. Being a police officer is not a job, it is a lifestyle choice. This means cops are always on the look-out, scanning their surroundings, assessing risks and generally ensuring there are zero threats. All subconsciously.

But the constant mental and physical state of flight or fight is exhausting. This stressful life can be associated with a high police officer infidelity rate, as the stress of the job can contribute to destabilizing life at home.

Difficulty in Opening up to Partners

The answer to the question of why do cops have affairs also seems to be linked to communication problems. Police officers find it difficult to explain to their partners what really goes on in their day-to-day lives. For instance, disturbing crime scenes can have a huge impact on their mental health.

They sometimes need to blow off some steam in order to carry out their work. Explaining this to a romantic partner can be challenging and it may feel more natural to turn towards a professional partner. Over time, they establish an emotional connection, which often leads to an increase in infidelity rates of police officers.

People find those in Uniform Attractive

When you see a member of the opposite sex working in an authoritative job, don’t you find this person attractive? The truth is that the symbolism of the weapon and badge are believed to be strong attractions.
One underlying reason for the high number of cheating police officers may have to do with the fact that a lot of people approach them, creating temptation. It is hard for anyone to avoid adventures when attractive members of the opposite sex are openly inviting.

Unstable Life at Home

Another potential reason for the infidelity rates of police officers is unhappiness within their homes. Think about the strain their jobs can put on their relationships with their spouses. Call-outs outside of rostered hours are part of the job, as is putting others' needs ahead of the needs of their own family.

Working long hours, coming home when the family is already asleep, and getting little time to spend with loved ones can take a toll in the long run.
When police officers no longer get to connect with their partners, they start to look for alternatives. As a result, the police officer infidelity rate starts to rise.

High-adrenaline and high-risk jobs coupled with long working hours make it more likely for police officers to cheat.
