Pottsville Pennsylvania Overview and Crime Rate Statistics

The city of Pottsville is a part of the Schuylkill County of the state of Pennsylvania. It was initially part of the Chester County. Then it became a part of Lancaster County. Finally, in 1851, it took on its role as the seat of Schuylkill County. It can be found on the western shores of Schuylkill River, in Pennsylvania’s coal region and is located to the south of Wilkes-Barre.

The city of Pottsville covers a land area of 4.17 square miles. It further has a population density of 3,438.3 persons per square mile. Pottsville has also been recognized as a third class city since 1911.

In 1790, Necho Allen discovered coal in the region when his campfire ignited an outcropping of coal. This discovery formed the basis of Pottsville's history in anthracite coal. The first iron furnace, which was fuelled by anthracite coal, was established on the Schuylkill River in 1795. This furnace was later purchased by John Potts, the founder of Pottsville on whom the city has been named.

The United States Census Bureau notes in its records that there were about 14,324 people in the city of Pottsville in 2010. The latest estimates state that the population is approximately 13,625, which is a 4.9 percent decrease over the past seven years. There are more women than men in Pottsville with 53.5 percent of the population comprising of females. Children below the age of 18 make up 19.2 percent of the population of Pottsville while about 19.7 percent of the people here are senior citizens above the age of 65.


In the racial-ethnic demographic, about 92.6 percent of the population identifies as white alone while 3.2 percent of the people identify as Hispanic or Latino. Meanwhile, an approximate of three percent of the population in Pottsville identify as African American, 0.2 percent identify as American Indian and Alaska Natives, 0.3 percent as Asian and 1.5 percent as persons of mixed races. Further, there are 1,293 veterans in the city, and one percent of the people in Pottsville are foreign-born.

There are a total of 5,881 households in the town as recorded during the period from 2012 to 2016. Each household has an average of 2.22 members. About 3.2 percent of the people of Pottsville speak a language other than English at home.

According to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) of the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the city of Pottsville noted a total of 724 criminal incidences in 2016. Among them, there were 46 cases of violent crime, 14 cases of rape, eight cases of robbery and 24 cases of aggravated assault. There were also 315 cases of property crime in Pottsville along with 31 cases of burglary, 266 cases of larceny-theft, 18 cases of motor vehicle theft and two cases of arson.

In 2012, there were a total of 616 criminal incidences reported in Pottsville. Among them were 54 cases of violent crime, one case of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 11 cases of rape, three cases of robbery, 39 cases of aggravated assault, 253 cases of property crime, 33 cases of burglary, 211 cases of larceny-theft, nine cases of motor vehicle theft and two cases of arson.
