Riverside California: Crimes Statistics, Arrest and Population Information

The city of Riverside is located on the Santa Ana River in the southern region of California. It is the county seat to the Riverside County and is a part of the metropolitan complex along with Ontario and San Bernardino. The city is home to Mount Rubidoux which towers at a height of 1,399 feet and the University of California's Riverside campus. Riverside covers a land area of 81.14 square miles and has a population density of 3,745 people per square mile.

The land on which Riverside lies today used to be a part of the 1938 Mexican land grant called Rancho Jurupa and the initial plans of the city were laid out in 1870. The city was initially called Jurupa and the colony was used to grow silk. In 1873, orange tree cuttings were brought in from Brazil and the first Washington navel-orange trees of California were cultivated in the city that was later named Riverside.

According to the records of the United States Census Bureau, there were about 308,871 people in the city of Riverside. The latest estimates state that the population is approximately 327,728, which is a 7.8 percent increase over the past seven years. There are more women than men in Riverside with 50.4 percent of the population comprising of females. Children below the age of 18 make up 24.8 percent of the population of Riverside while about 10.1 percent of the people here are senior citizens above the age of 65.

In the racial-ethnic demographic, about 31.9 percent of the population identifies as white alone while 52 percent of the people identify as Hispanic or Latino. Meanwhile, an approximate of six percent of the population in Riverside identify as African American, 0.8 percent identify as American Indian and Alaska Natives, 6.9 percent as Asian, 0.3 percent as Pacific Islanders and five percent as persons of mixed races. Further, there are 13,350 veterans in the city and 22.4 percent of the people in Riverside are foreign-born.

 

There are a total of 91,940 households in the city as recorded during the period from 2012 to 2016. Each household has an average of 3.34 members. About 41.6 percent of the people of Riverside speak a language other than English at home.

Among the residents older than 25 years, about 79 percent are high school graduates or have pursued further studies. Among them, 22.6 percent have attained bachelors' degrees or have sought higher education.

About 66 percent of the overall population above the age of 16 are in the civilian labor force. The median household income in the region is $ 58,979 and the per-capita income of Riverside is $ 23,061. About 17.8 percent of the population is earning below the levels of poverty.

According to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) of the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the city of Riverside noted a total of 26,037 criminal incidences in 2016. Among them, there were 1,724 cases of violent crime, 10 cases of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 141 cases of rape, 987 cases of robbery and 11,266 cases of aggravated assault. There were also 1,977 cases of property crime, 7,355 cases of burglary, 7,355 cases of larceny-theft, 1,934 cases of motor vehicle theft and 57 cases of arson.

In 2015, there were a total of 24,015 criminal incidences reported in Riverside. Among them were 1,441 cases of violent crime, 10 cases of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 137 cases of rape, 520 cases of robbery, 774 cases of aggravated assault, 10,531 cases of property crime, 1,633 cases of burglary, 7,144 cases of larceny-theft, 1,754 cases of motor vehicle theft and 71 cases of arson.
