This is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It is the inner-ring streetcar suburb of Cleveland that abuts the city’s eastern edge. It was in July 1911 that a petition was signed by the property owners here and they were successful in detaching the long stretch of land from the south of Cleveland Heights and named it Shaker Heights. This is a planned community that was developed by the Van Sweringen brothers who were railroad moguls who envisioned the community as a place for a suburban retreat from the inner city of Cleveland that is more industrial.
According to the US Census Bureau, this city has a total area of 6.32 square miles out of which a total of 6.28 square miles makes upland, and the other 0.04 square miles is water. This city is located roughly 1050 feet above sea level and is around 6 miles inland from the Lake Erie. Of the 11,840 households, 34.4% had children below the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were couples that were married and living together, 15.3% were female only households without a husband present while 3.1% were male-only households with no wife present. 31.1% of households were made up of individuals, and 12.5% were someone over the age of 65 who lived alone. The average size of a household was 2.39, and that of a family was 3.03. The gender makeup here was 54.8% female and 45.2% male.
The median income for a household here was $76,476, and the median income of a family here was $105,660. The per capita income of the city was $47,360. The total percentage of families and the population that lies below the poverty level here is 5.3% and 8.6% respectively.
