Tallahassee has a reputation of being the hotbed of crime. This image is further fueled by various movies and TV shows that feature car chases, gruesome killings, and battles. The rising talk about crime in Tallahassee has to lead many to believe that it is spiraling out of control.
However, recent studies show that there is an overall decrease in the crime rates of this area although it has said that Leon Country is the top crime rate in the past four years. In 2017, there were almost 15% fewer crimes recorded as compared to 2016. This reduction in crime rate is attributed to a community policing policy that has recently been advocated in the state.
The sudden spike only hampered this decline in the crime rate in the number of homicides in Leon Country, i.e., 22 in 2017 as opposed to 12 in 2016. Before that the highest number of murders was 21 in 2015, 2012 and 2014 tied at 17, and 2010 with 15 homicides. Nonetheless, the city aims to turn the tide and is on pace for a better result this year. This trend is seen in the fact that in the first six months of 2017 there was one more murder than the number in the first six months of 2018. There have been a total of 7 fatal shootings and three fatal stabbings in Florida this year.
Although there may be a few discrepancies in these details, it is safe to say that Tallahassee is on the war against crime and is paving a path towards being a safer city.
