Uniontown Pennsylvania Overview and Crime Rates

Uniontown is a city in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in the United States. It is 46 miles southeast of Pittsburgh and is part of the Greater Pittsburgh Region. It is also known as Beesontown after its founder Hendry Beeson. This city was coincidently founded on the same day as the ratification of the United States Declaration of Independence that is 4th of July, 1776. To the southwest of Uniontown is Fort Necessity that was built during the French and Indian Was by George Washington.

It was later in the nineteenth century when this town grew due to the development of the steel industry and coal mining. This is also the town where the Big Mac Sandwich was born in 1967.

The total area of Uniontown is 2.04 square miles that are composed of all land. This city lies 999 feet above sea level and is resting on the base of Chestnut Ridge which is the westernmost ridge of the Appalachian Mountains to the east. The climate here is humid, and there are frigid winters and warm summers owing to its location in the mountains.

According to the latest census in 2010 there were a total of 10,372 people, 3,031 families, and 5,423 households. The population density here was 5136 people per square mile. There are a total of 6,320 housing units that have an average density of 3,103 per square miles. The 5,423 households comprise of 23.7% of those that had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% were married couples that lived together, 16% were female households with no husband around, and a total of 44.1% were non-families. The median income of a household here was $31,760, and that of a family was $37,841.

 

The calculated per capita income of the city was $22,457. Some of the famous people who call this city home are Henry Biddleman Bascom who was a religious circuit rider, US congressional chaplain, Methodist Bishop, and the first president of Madison College; John Dickson Carr, mystery writer; Jim Delligatti, inventor of the Big Mac, and Kaleb Ramsey, former NFL player.
