Well, the definition of joy versus happiness may still seem to mean the same. How can you differentiate between the two synonyms?

The psychological definition of joy versus happiness may help shed some light on the difference between joy versus happiness. Both joy and happiness are feelings. Joy Versus Happiness
Being Joyful Versus Being Happy, what do you prefer?

Joy versus happiness can still mean the same, but it is up to you what you choose between being joyful versus being happy. Joy cannot be dictated by good or bad circumstance and happiness is rooted in circumstance. You can’t feel happiness in everything irrespective of the circumstance, can you?

Everybody has a different perspective on joy versus happiness. Happiness depends on external factors. You need to seek, desire, and pursue happiness. Feeling happy is not a choice that you make, but joy is. Joy is a choice that you can make. No matter the circumstance, you can feel joy if you have the desire to. Joy is an attitude that you develop from within yourself, it is an attitude of your heart and your spirit.

Yet another way to differentiate between being joyful versus being happy is based on how materialistic our lives have become. Most often we feel happy when we have gifted something valuable. Now imagine a poor person who has been starving for several days; a person who does not have the means to buy food. A plateful of food at dinner time can make you happy or unhappy based on what is being served. But the same plate full of food brings joy to a starving person. That’s the difference between joy versus happiness. Being joyful versus being happy is a state of mind. Joy is beyond happiness.

Difference Between Joy and Happiness
You have a choice to make!

Joy never leaves you. It is an attitude that brings peace and contentment to life. Joy is an untapped reservoir of potential. You can feel joy at any time, even in difficult times. Joy can be shared with anger, shame, as well as sadness; but not happiness. You cannot be happy when you are in a dark place or have difficulty. Happiness is temporary and it passes through when the moment is over.

Happiness is a pleasurable or a satisfying experience and depends on circumstance. When circumstances change, happiness can turn into unhappiness and lead to despair and depression. Joy, on the other hand, is an emotion that is evoked by the prospect of possessing what you desire. It is always accompanied by hope. Where there is hope, there is joy, and where there is joy, there is always hope.

Both joy and happiness are emotions, and you can achieve them both in your lifetime. How you choose to live your life, being joyful versus being happy, is up to you.
