The Secrets to Keeping Your Relationship Fresh

Relationships usually begin strong, and after an initial attraction, if you are compatible, then you can move into what is known as the honeymoon phase. At the beginning of many relationships, it is usually easy to get along, acts of love come willingly from both sides, but after this initial phase, a lot of hard work needs to be put into a relationship in order for it to last for years.

We have put together a number of ways to keep a relationship going strong for years to come. One thing to remember is that no couple is the same, so never compare yourselves to a couple you are friends with or a neighbor or colleague’s relationship.

How to Keep a Relationship

Trust

One of the most important aspects of a relationship is trust, without it, a relationship cannot last long. Many people can go through the beginning of a relationship by lying either to oneself or to their partner, but this cannot last for a while as it leads to unhappiness. Trust is something that doesn’t come right away and it is something that is built up, can be lost and found again. It is an essential component in becoming emotionally intimate with someone else.

There are many ways to build trust in a relationship. One way is to mean what you say, and say what you mean. This will let your partner know that when you say something they can bank on it. Someone who’s doesn’t believe 100% what their partner says may begin to doubt everything including when someone says I love you.

Expressions of Love

Little things help build a strong foundation of love in a relationship. It can be something simple, like never leaving for work in the morning without saying something nice to the other. Listening to whatever your partner has to say is also very important in a relationship and goes a long way be it about a good day at the office or a bad day. Even if it is not a birthday or anniversary, bringing a small gift like flowers or their favorite cookie shows that you think about your spouse throughout the day and want to make them happy. Complimenting your partner is also a very simple way to express how much you care for them.

Communication

In many relationships, partners confuse communication for talking. While it is a necessity for communication, talking does not necessarily mean you are communicating. The key to communication in a relationship is understanding. In some cases, no words are needed to show your partner you understand how they feel, if they had a hard day doing something simple like washing the dishes communicates to your partner that you understand that they need a break and that you are there to help them through it. Another important part of communication is to admit when you are wrong, this lets your partner know that they can trust you in the future and is fundamental in a relationship.

How to Keep a Healthy Relationship

Quality Time

Everyone gets busy in life, but it is important to keep the spark going by spending time with your partner one on one. Many couples find that a weekly date night is a good way to do this. If you have kids, hire a babysitter for one night a week, aside from getting quality time with your partner, it is good to get a break from the hectic side of family life. Another way to show your partner you want to spend time with them is by taking a trip together or joining a class together. Spending time with your loved one lets them know that you still enjoy spending time with them and that they are loved.

Compromise

One of the main reasons that many relationships fail nowadays is the fact that people do not understand what it takes to make a relationship work. While in the beginning, everyone is willing to make compromises, that usually goes away once the honeymoon phase is over. It is important to create an environment where compromise is normal and expected in many cases. While a couple should be aligned on major issues, each should be prepared to compromise on many of the smaller matters. No individual in a couple is exactly the same, so compromise is a necessity. It is important to throw away the notion of winning and losing over an argument in a relationship. If you lose a fight, you win the relationship by making your partner happier.

How to Keep a Relationship Alive

Keep it Fun

Many relationships after a while become routine, you come home from work, make dinner, watch TV go to sleep and repeat daily for the rest of your lives. In order to make sure your partner does not become bored with the relationship, you need to make sure you keep it fun. While this can be done by going for date night, it is also good to mix things up and surprise your partner. It is important to explore new areas and be open to activities you do not usually do. This can take the form of going to a concert, signing up for a dance class or hiking. Fun times that you share with your partner refreshes the relationship and is a key to making the relationship last.

Keep the Fire Alive

Aside from retaining an emotional connection with your partner, it is essential to ensure that the sexual connection does not die. Many couples at the start of a relationship are crazy about sex and spend every available opportunity to make love with their partner. After 10 years, it sometimes starts to feel like a chore and is only done when necessary. It is important to take time to learn about what pleases and excites your partner sexually and to make sure they are satisfied. Being open to experimenting is a good way to keep the spark alive in a relationship. Many couples find that roleplaying is a great way to mix things up sexually and to fulfill the fantasies of your partner.
