Lyft Review: What You Need to Know about Lyft Background Checks

Drive share services have become increasingly popular over the past few years, and Lyft is one of them. The easy to use app allows people to get from one place to the other quickly and easily, and enjoy a nice drive with experienced drivers. Nowadays, people who have a license and a car can become Lyft drivers, and you can be one of them. However, a vehicle and a license are only the first requirements of becoming a driver with Lyft. To make sure all the passengers are safe, the app owners perform a Lyft background check on drivers whenever they apply to become a part of Lyft.

Lyft Driver Requirements

Before you move on to the Lyft background check reviews, these are the requirements of becoming a Lyft driver:

  • Drivers must be at least 21 years old (except New York City where the minimum age requirement is 18).
  • Drivers in the following states must have at least one year of licensed driving experience: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington.
  • Drivers in the states listed above who have a recently re-issued license may get an error message in their Lyft application.
  • The following states do not require a driver license issue date: Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington.
Lyft Background Check

If you receive an error message when applying for Lyft in one of the states listed above, you need to refer to the instructions on Lyft's website.

  • Driving record check: potential Lyft drivers must undergo a driving record check that is performed by a third-party company. Several criteria are checked as part of Lyft's safety requirements, and the following are disqualifiers with the company:
  • One major moving violation (like an accident) is the past three years
  • More than three moving violations in the past three years
  • One serious driving-related conviction in the past seven years
  • A DUI or another drug-related driving violation from the past three years

If certain applicants are disqualified after a DMV check, they will receive a copy of the report to their email. DMV and criminal background checks in New York City are conducted by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and not by Lyft company.

Lyft Background Check

A Lyft background check review allows Lyft to check potential drivers' criminal past. To perform a Lyft background check, potential drivers must give their consent to undergo such a check. To undergo the check, drivers must have a valid social security number, and like the DMV check, a third-party company (Checkr, Inc) performs the criminal checks. To get full data about drivers, Checkr, Inc checks county-level and national databases. Also, Checkr searches local courthouse records to find the Department of Justice Sex Offender Registry records, convictions, and Federal criminal records.

Lyft Review

Once the search is complete, Lyft reviews the results against internal safety criteria. Drivers that are not eligible to be a part of the Lyft team are those who:

  • Have been convicted of a violent crime (such as kidnapping, homicide, arson, burglary, aggravated assault, carjacking, or robbery)
  • Are listed as registered sex offenders
  • Have been convicted of an act of terror
  • Have been convicted of a sexual offense
  • Have committed a fraud-related offense in the past seven years
  • Have been convicted of a property damage offense or theft in the past seven years
  • Have committed a drug-related offense in the past seven years
  •  Have been convicted of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in the past seven years
  • Drivers who have left Lyft and wish to get become drivers with the company again must undergo an up-to-date criminal background check.

A Lyft background check in New York City is conducted by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and not by Lyft company.

In any case, where potential Lyft drivers are disqualified from becoming Lyft drivers, they will receive a copy of the report to their email.
