How to Become a Better Mother

New mothers often think that they need to do big things for their little ones to be a good parent. More often than not, it’s the little things that matter the most. People who’ve come from homes with great parents often recall the little things that their parents did for them. For instance, you could keep your child happy in a sense by showering him or her with gifts which would be the lazy way. You could also take time out of your week to do something with just your son or daughter which he/she will look back on fondly years later which is a little harder but ultimately, more rewarding. Examples of activities could be a movie night or a walk with each other to just get to know what’s happening in your child’s life.

It’s often said that a mothers job is the hardest job in the world. Here are a couple of tips you can follow so that you can be a great mother.

1. Spend time with them – This bit of advice doesn’t look like it should even need to be said. However, the sad truth is that most mothers are busy juggling jobs and being a parent in 2018. Twice a day for fifteen minutes each is enough to strengthen your emotional connection with your child. You need to stop any task you are doing and just sit down and spend time with them for those 15 minutes. Do not try to do the dishes or iron some clothes while spending time with them because your attention will be divided. Give them your full and undivided attention.

2. Don’t ignore yourself –
If you take care of yourself first, you will be in a much better position to take care of your children. It is similar to the oxygen mask principle. The oxygen mask principle advises adults to put their oxygen masks on first before helping their children with theirs. Mothers usually put their needs behind their children's needs which makes everyone suffer in the end. Setting aside a little time for yourself is a great way for you to de-stress, so you're ready to take on future challenges.

3. Teach your kids about life earlier rather than later – It is tempting to say that your kids are too young for you to talk to them about sex and money. However, David Ezell who is a licensed professional counselor recommends talking to them about it as early as when they are four. While fourteen-year-old teenagers might whine and be embarrassed, four-year-old children are much more receptive to new ideas. Talk to them about sex and money and do your best to normalize these things.

4. Radiate confidence –
As a mother, you are your child's role model. He or she looks up to you for everything and as a result, learn by seeing and imitating you. If you are filled with self-doubt, cast it aside and learn to be confident at least in front of your child. Your child will see how you handle tough situations with confidence and will emulate your behavior when faced with similar situations.

Being a great mother to your child is hard, but it isn't impossible. You are already on the road to success by looking up how to be a better mother. As long as you are doing the best you can, no one can ask for more and your child will grow up knowing that he/she had a fantastic mother who did everything she could for them.
