New Jersey Drivers Training: Behind the Wheel Training and Permit Training

A valid Driver’s License is a must for anyone who is willing to drive a vehicle in New Jersey. First-time drivers need to pass certain tests to get the Driver’s License of the basic category, and you will be introduced to the various aspects of driving in different stages.

The Graduated Driver License Program or the GDL program is what first-time drivers need to go through. But if you haven’t yet reached the age of 21 years, then you are not eligible for this until you have spent a certain period driving under a supervisor. But before the practice driving sessions, you will have to go to any MVC Driving Testing Center where the permit of the permit holder will be validated.

Graduated Driver License Program

The GDL program has different processes for the different age groups, and each of them is explained in brief below –

  • For those who are 16 years of age

You will need to get a Student Learner’s Permit. For that, you will have to visit a motor vehicle agency where you will require your primary ID document. A licensed driving instructor will have to accompany you. You will have to pay a fee of $10. Then you will have to pass the vision test and the knowledge test. But, in place of the knowledge test, you can also submit your waiver card of high school in case you passed a written test taken there. Then you will have to take a behind-the-wheel experience of six hours in a dual-controlled vehicle. Then your permit will be validated until you are 17 years of age subject to that you complete six months of driving under a supervisor.

  • For those who are 17 years of age and above

If you haven’t reached 18 years of age, then your parents will have to give you a letter of consent which you will have to submit. Only then will you be able to apply for the Examination Permit. You will have to visit your 6 Points of ID when you visit a motor vehicle agency for your application. Just like the previous procedure, you will have to pass the vision and knowledge test. Then your practice driving permit will be validated. If you are under 21 years of age, then you can give your Road Test only after six months of validation during which you have to practice supervised driving. But if you are already 21 years of age or above, you can take the Road Test straight away. Once that is done, you will have to undergo supervised driving for three months.
