How Social Media Can Affect Your Health and Life

From ideas, photos, moments, relationships status or anything else that happens to us at every single moment

Have you ever stopped and thought about the number of hours you spend on social media every day? How many endless hours just browsing random pictures of people you have very little connection, or no connection to at all. When you go to any random place such a restaurant or a coffee shop, if you stop to look around, you will notice that about 60 percent of people are looking down at their phones with no communication or relation to the world that is going on around them!

Teenagers spend as much as 8 hours per day on social media, through their phones.

Kids between the ages of 8 and 12 spend the average of 6 to 7 hours per day.

While the average person spends 90 minutes per day on their phone.

These numbers are extremely high. That means that the average person spends an average of 23 days per year on their phone!

It gets even more interesting when the average person spends 24 hours a week just being online!

How is all of this related to you? Well, social media has serious negative affects on your social life!

social media affects

Here are some things you should know:

Social media causes anxiety and depression! Social media can seriously affect your mood. If you spend hours using social media every day you are a lot more likely to have moody behavior and report symptoms of depression.

Social media is directly related to the increase of cyberbullying. In the past, bullying was an act which was done face to face. With the rise of social media use, bullying has gone online and became viral. It is now a lot easier for bullies to bully people through the internet. Online bullying has results in serious damage to people as well as death in some of the cases.

Fear of missing out. When you browse social applications and see people sharing their ‘happy’ moments, you are a lot more likely to develop fear or missing out and depression about your life position. You are also less likely to be happy with your current life. With that being said, people start developing unrealistic life expectations when they see how other people live. What they fail to understand that what happens behind phone cameras is almost never real.

People who spend hours on social media tend to develop self body issues and self image issues. When you follow your favorite celebrities and other type of people you tend to think that their life is perfect as well as their bodies. In 2018, body issues is on the rise for many social media users.

Sleep issues. People who spend hours on their phone and social media applications tend to have sleep issues. With the increased anxiety follows into poor sleep. Social media has direct correlation and negative affects on sleep quality.

Addiction. We become addicted to our phones, we have to check it every 2 minutes to make sure we are not missing out on anything. This addiction triggers other parts of our brain making us more addicted to other things such smoking and alcohol.

Do you know the saying, if everyone else does it - Does that mean its good?

About 40% of the world’s population is using social media online with the average of 3 hours per day.

It is time to take control of your life and realize the negative affects social media applications and use have on your life.

Take a break from social media, see how it affects you and your ever day life. Put yourself on a schedule or speak to someone about your social media habits. Just because everyone else is online, sharing and tweeting, taking pictures - Does not mean its the right.

Like everything else in life, balance is the most important thing to keep our health!
