The current The Brown County Jail and Law Enforcement Center was started in the year 1994. The jail in Brown County can house about 56 male and female offenders. Along with the jail functions Brown County also alerts for the severe weather condition in the neighborhood places of New Ulm, Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Comfrey, Evan, Cobden, and Hanska.

The new facility is quite well-equipped, and the sheriff believes that having new and latest equipment will help them serve the public better.  Some of the states of the art equipment used at Brown County are police radio, Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf/Hearing Impaired (TDD), Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), and GEO Lynx Mapping System. A lookup tool is also available to find an inmate in the facility and also their status and purpose of detention.

They provide basic amenities that are provided to inmates in a correctional facility like jail. Some of such services are the following

Educational Service – Various types of educational programs are run by the jail to ensure that the willing inmates get exposed to some kind of education.

Spiritual Service – For inmates seeking spiritual assistance, the Brown county jail provides such services.

Work Program – The jail has various work opportunities such as the Huber Work Release, Sentenced to Service (STS) and an in-house worker.

Commissary Service - The inmates have access to purchase basic need items such as personal hygiene items. They can also buy writing items, over the counter healthcare products as well as food products.

Banking Service – Each of the detainees at the jail has a bank account the jail maintains an account for them to buy things at the commissary or pay for the medical expense.

Phone Service – The detainees can buy calling cards, all calls are tracked except the ones made to the attorneys.

 

Food Service – Three balanced meals are served to each inmate on a daily basis.

Healthcare Service – The inmates in the Brown County Jail, has access to health care providers.

Mail Service – A mail service is provided for the detainees, but it is always under scrutiny to prevent criminal activity.

The Brown County Jail detains offender who has committed the following types of crimes.

When a person commits a crime and is awaiting trial. If a person has received a sentence which is less than a period of one year. A person who has received the sentence for more than a year and awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections to serve that sentence. A person arrested under the jurisdiction of Brown County and waiting for transfer for trial in another jurisdiction. 

There are other scenarios or circumstances under which an offender might also be detained at the Brown County Jail.

The Old Brown County Jail has now been turned into a museum. The earlier Jail housed the sheriff inside premises like many other jails.

County Jail Current Information

Currently, the sheriff’s office runs several programs. Some of them are the following:

Road Patrol – They assist and also works toward prevention of crime. Patrol officers are seen throughout the area under the Brown County jurisdiction.

Sheriff's Reserve – It is open for people above 21 years of age and having POST-part-time peace officer license. They are assigned duties for 8 hours a month.

Snowmobile Patrol – Frozen water usage is regulated by them.

Boat Patrol – Public and private waters are guarded by the boat patrol.

They also have an Emergency Response Unit for any imminent need and a Commercial Vehicle Unit to enforce any traffic regulation.

Contacting Inmates in Brown County Jail

If you wish to contact an inmate in Brown County Jail, you can do so in several different ways; the first method for contacting Brown County Jail inmates is by sending them a mail via the United States Post Office. If mail is not sent via the United States Post Office, it will not be delivered to the inmate in question. Any piece of mail sent to the may be inspected by jail staff.

You can also call the Brown County Jail if you want to speak to an inmate, but if they are not available, no messages can be taken for them. If you still wish to leave a message to an inmate in the facility, you can leave a voicemail message at (507) 354-6959 (messages are not confidential, and they are subject to inspection).

Inmates in the Brown County Jail can also make calls to friends and family members, and they can do so by using a pre-paid card. Cards are available in the facility, and they cost $10, $20 and $50. Calls from inmates cannot be made in other methods unless using collect calls at 1-800-896-3201.
