Illinois Arrest Records and Inmate Search
You may have a friend or relative in state prison. The person may have been incarcerated many years back, and you may want to know if he has been released or is still in prison. There is another scenario where you are searching for someone in prison but are not sure where he is being housed. In all such situations, there are different ways to find out if someone is in jail in Illinois.
Like in all other states, in Illinois, prisoners are sent to the county jail for minor offenses where imprisonment is less than a year. For all major offenses, they are sent to the state prison. The state prisons are maintained by the Department of Corrections. The county jails are maintained by the Sheriff or police chief of the respective county.
Searching for Illinois State Prison Inmates
To search for an inmate lodged in a county jail in Illinois, you need to contact the respective county or visit the county website. Some of the websites may have online search facilities. Details of all state prison inmates are maintained by the Department of Corrections in the state. For the inconvenience of friends, relatives, and members of the general public, the department has created an online search facility on its website.
You can visit https://www2.illinois.gov/idoc/offender/pages/inmatesearch.aspx to search for state prison inmates in Illinois. The inmate search facility on the website is simple and easy to use. Even someone not familiar with the use of computers can use this facility to find someone who is lodged in an Illinois prison.
This is how the inmate locator works:
1) One of three details needs to be typed in the given search box – either the date of birth of the inmate, the unique IDOC number allotted to each prisoner or the last name. It is not necessary to type the entire name; a few letters are enough. However, to get an exact match, the full name or date of birth may be required.
2) Once you type the details, click on the Find button. The utility shows all profiles that match your search query. The name, date of birth, and IDOC number are displayed.
3) Go through the search results, when you find the name you are looking for, select, and click on Query a highlighted inmate. You can then see the full profile with a photo. It will show you the name of the prison where the inmate is presently housed.
