Jefferson County Jail: Everything about Jefferson County Jail and Inmates!
The Jefferson County Jail houses state and federal inmates awaiting trial or transfer to the State of Alabama’s Department of Corrections. The Sheriff maintains complete law enforcement jurisdiction in all cities and townships within the county, and one of his main responsibilities is the operation and maintenance of the county jail. This service has to be provided seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.
There are two jails in Jefferson County, the Birmingham County Jail and the Bessemer County Jail. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters is located in the Birmingham Division, at 2200 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd, Birmingham.
The Chief Deputy is the second in command. He oversees the daily operation and administration of the Office. The Assistant Sheriff is in charge of the Bessemer Cut-Off Division and reports to the Sheriff.
The Jefferson County Corrections Division includes both the Birmingham County Jail and the Bessemer County Jail. It processes approximately 43,000 inmates in and out of jail annually, and the average daily inmate count for both jails is over 1200 inmates per day, increasing every year. Both facilities have on-site medical services, while law libraries and adult educational services are available at the Birmingham facility.
The Sheriff’s Office has many specialized units at their disposal. These include the Motor Scouts, Bomb Squad, Canine Unit, Crisis Negotiation Team, Animal Cruelty Specialists, Truck Weighing Unit, Honor Guard, and S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics), Computer Forensics, Convicted Sex Offender Investigator Unit, Cold Case Unit, Vice and Narcotics Unit, Terrorism Unit and the Highway Traffic Safety Unit.
Jail Visitation in Jefferson County
Only immediate family members are permitted to visit incarcerated people held at either jail. As a visitor, you need to present a valid photo ID. If you are under 18 years of age, you will be denied entry to the jails for visitation.
Packages are not allowed to be dropped off at the jails for delivery to the inmates. If a parcel or box is delivered to the jail, it will be returned to the sender.
You can leave money for an inmate in a couple of different ways.
- You can make money order payable to the inmate. The money order must be placed in a money envelope and dropped in the box which is located in the lobby of each facility. Details that have to be on the envelope include the name of the inmate, the name of the sender, the amount of the money order, as well as the inmate’s JCID number (if unknown, leave blank). The money will be transferred to the inmate’s account on the next business day.
- You can leave money for an inmate through the lobby kiosk. There is a kiosk at both the Birmingham and Bessemer prison facilities, which accept cash only and no credit or debit cards.
Visitation for the Birmingham Jail is from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The visitation schedule is organized around the first initial of the inmate’s last name. Mondays are scheduled for A,B,C, Tuesdays for D,E,F, Wednesday H,I,J,K,L, Thursday M,N,O,P,Q, Friday R,S,T, Saturday U,V,W,X,Y,Z.
Visitation for the Bessemer Jail is organized similarly. A-G Saturday 8:00 am to 11:00 pm, H-Q Saturday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, R-Z Sunday at 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
The State Department of Corrections limits the amount of property a newly sentenced inmate may bring with them. The property should be picked up by a friend or family member no later than 30 days after transfer. After 30 days the property will be donated to Goodwill/Salvation Army or destroyed.

Jefferson County Jail Inmates
The amount of available beds in the Birmingham facility is 1,075, against 198 in the Bessemer facility. It is interesting to note that the Birmingham facility was originally designed to have 620 beds and the Bessemer Jail was designed to have 100 beds.
Jail personnel can provide information to concerned individuals regarding an inmate's charges, bond amount, how to arrange bond, and other issues that arise during an inmate's jail stay. The jail does not maintain information on court dates for individual inmates. This information can be obtained by calling District Court at 325-5309 or Circuit Court at 325-5285 for the Birmingham Jail, or Bessemer District Court at 497-8520 or Bessemer Circuit Court at 497-8510, for the Bessemer Jail.

You can find out if a particular individual is held in Jefferson County in case you want to contact them in any way. Under State Law, a public accounting is to be made available to all persons incarcerated in the County Jail. A copy of the Jail’s Docket Book is available for public viewing in the lobby of both the Birmingham and Bessemer facility.
