The Sheriff maintains complete law enforcement jurisdiction in all cities and townships within the county. One of the Sheriff’s main responsibilities is the operation and maintenance of the county jail. This service has to be provided seven days a week for all twenty-four hours in a day.
There are two jails in Jefferson County. There is a Birmingham county jail and a Bessemer county jail. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters is located in the Birmingham Division. It is located at 2200 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd, Birmingham.
The Chief Deputy is the second in command. He oversees the daily operation and administration of the Office. The Assistant Sheriff is in charge of the Bessemer Cut-Off Division and reports to the Sheriff.
The Jefferson County Corrections Division includes both the Birmingham County Jail and the Bessemer County Jail. There are more than 29,000 people who are committed to the jails each year. The average daily inmate count for both jails is over 1200 inmates per day and is increasing every year.
The Sheriff’s Office has many specialized units at their disposal. The units at the Sheriff’s disposal are Motor Scouts, Bomb Squad, Canine Unit, Crisis Negotiation Team, Animal Cruelty Specialists, Truck Weighing Unit, Honor Guard, and S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics), Computer Forensics, Convicted Sex Offender Investigator Unit, Cold Case Unit, Vice and Narcotics Unit, Terrorism Unit and the Highway Traffic Safety Unit.
Jail Visitation in Jeffeson County!
Only immediate family members are permitted to visit incarcerated people held at either jail. As a visitor, you need to present a valid photo ID. If you are under 18 years of age, you will be denied entry to the jails for visitation.
Packages are not allowed to be dropped off at the jails for delivery to the inmates. If a parcel or box is delivered to the jail, it will be returned to the sender.
You can leave money for an inmate in a couple of different ways.
- You can make a money order payable to the inmate. The money order must be placed in a money envelope and dropped in the box which is located in the lobby of each facility. Details that have to be on the envelope include the name of the inmate, the name of the sender, the amount of the money order, as well as the inmate’s JCID number (if unknown, leave blank). The money will be transferred to the inmate’s account on the next business day.
- You can leave money for an inmate through the lobby kiosk. There is a kiosk at both of the Birmingham and Bessemer prison facilities. The kiosk accepts cash only and not credit or debit cards.
Visitation for the Birmingham Jail is from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The visitation schedule is organized around the first initial of the inmate’s last name. Mondays are scheduled for A,B,C, Tuesdays for D,E,F, Wednesday H,I,J,K,L, Thursday M,N,O,P,Q, Friday R,S,T, Saturday U,V,W,X,Y,Z.

The amount of available beds in the Birmingham facility is 1,075 beds. There are 198 beds available in the Bessemer facility. It is interesting to note that the Birmingham facility was originally designed to have 620 beds and the Bessemer Jail was designed to have 100 beds.
