How Fast Should My Internet Be for Netflix and Other Similar Services

Streaming services are fast gaining popularity for their ease-of-use. Not everybody has the time or hard drive space to download entire movies. Plus, video streaming services are more convenient any day with their variety of movies on offer. You can watch multiple movies without using up too much network data. However, what you do need is good internet speed. Come let’s find out just how fast your internet speed needs to be in order to comfortably stream movies on Netflix and other similar services –

  • Netflix – The minimum speed recommendation for running Netflix is 0.5 Mbps. You can easily watch standard definition videos with this speed but the quality is most likely to suffer. Netflix recommends a minimum of 1.5 Mbps for streaming its videos.

3 Mbps is the ideal speed which will enable you to watch quality standard definition videos on a laptop/TV screen.

While you can watch high definition videos on a net speed of 4 Mbps, it is recommended you opt for 5 Mbps for a better viewing experience.

Ultra HD/4 K movies are best watched at a speed of 25 Mbps or higher. Although, an internet speed of 15 Mbps will suffice.

Netflix assesses your net speed to tailor its video quality. If you’re running a low internet speed, it won’t stream HD videos even if the option is available. The picture quality takes a hit but you don’t have to wait for the video to buffer.

  • Amazon Video – Amazon warns its users that it may not be able to run its program well if they are using a proxy server for their internet connection. Other than that, its speed recommendations are quite straight-forward. The ideal speed to stream standard definition videos is 0.9 Mbps while 3.5 Mbps will facilitate HD video viewing.
  • Hulu – Hulu has two-speed recommendations for streaming content and another extra to stream live content. Streaming across multiple devices will most likely require higher bandwidth. The speed recommended for viewing SD videos is 1.5 Mbps while that for HD videos is 3 Mbps. Hulu with Live TV should be viewed at a speed of 8 Mbps.
  • Apple TV – Apple TV offers three kinds of definitions – Standard, Mid and High. Standard Definition requires a net speed of 2.5 Mbps, Mid Definition or 720p can be viewed at a speed of 6 Mbps. Lastly, High Definition videos are best viewed at 8 Mbps.
  • YouTube – Watching SD videos on a mobile device requires a minimum speed of 0.5 Mbps. The same becomes 7 Mbps when attempting to stream HD videos.

If you happen to be watching your YouTube videos on a TV/computer screen – it is recommended that you view standard definition videos at a net speed of 3 Mbps. 5 Mbps should be enough to stream HD videos well. 25 Mbps is recommended for Ultra HD/4K video watching.

  • SHOWTIME – SHOWTIME makes its internet speed recommendation based on the device you use to stream its services on. So for a mobile device, the speed recommendation is 0.8 Mbps and the same for a TV/Computer is 5 Mbps.
  • HBO Go – HBO Go comes with an umbrella speed recommendation of 3 Mbps +. It won’t hurt to buy yourself an internet package with a higher speed if you intend to stream HD videos on it.

If you do not know what your internet speed is, there are many websites online that will measure your internet speed for you. Once you have this down, just adjust this speed to reflect the kind of videos you expect to watch and the video service you intend to stream it on.
