How to Register Vote in New York?

Eligibility to vote in New York
A person must fulfill the following conditions to register to vote in New York.
- The person must be a citizen of the United States
- The person should have been a resident of New York City for at least 30 days.
- The person should be 18 years of age.
- The person should not be on parole for a felony conviction or be serving a jail sentence.
- The person should be mentally stable and should not be declared mentally incompetent by a court.
- The person should not claim the right to vote somewhere else outside of New York.
Registering to vote online in New York
You can register online if you have the following:
- Your driver license, permit or non-driver ID issued by the New York State DMV
- Your current ZIP Code which is on record with the DMV
- The last four numbers of your Social Security Number (SSN)
For you to register online, you can use the DMV Electronic Voter Registration Application or update your personal information which you share with the New York State Board of Elections. Updated information generally includes providing your new name, new address, or only if you want to change a party enrollment to your county or City Board of Elections.
If in some instances, you have trouble registering online, make sure you enter your document number accurately and the ZIP Code which is on record. If you do not have a recent New York State DMV issued identification, you will not be able to register online through DMV. In that case, you would have to register in person or by mail.

For your form to be useful for the election, it must be delivered or mailed at least 25 days before the election.

Registering in person in New York
In addition to registering online or through the mail, you can register to vote in person at your local county board of elections, or a New York State Agency-based registration center.
For victims of domestic violence
If you are a victim of domestic violence, N.Y. Election Law (5-508) will allow you if you obtain a court order from NY Supreme Court, County Court or Family Court in the county where they are registered to keep your voter registration record and separate it from other registration records. In this way, your file will not be available for inspection or to the public except only for election officials.
