The Chief of police heads the MPD. There is a Chief Operating Officer in the department who assists the chief in managing the police operations. The ranks under the Chief of Police are:

  • Patrol Chief
  • Assistant Chief
  • Commander
  • Inspector
  • Captain

  • Sergeant
  • Officer

The department has the following divisions:

  • Patrol Services North and South that manage patrol in the city. The city has been divided into seven districts for operational purposes.
  • The Homeland Security Bureau handles security in the city and coordinates with the Federal department. It has a Special Operations Division and a Joint Strategic and Tactical Analysis Command Center.
  • The Corporate Support Bureau supports the working of the department. It provides support to other divisions. It has a property division, medical services division, fleet services division, and records division.
  • Professional Development Bureau has the recruiting division for selecting new staff. It has the Metropolitan Police Academy, Human resource management division, and the Disciplinary review division.
  • The Investigative Services bureau handles all investigations in the city. It has the Criminal investigation division, Narcotics and special investigations division, Crime scene investigation division, Youth and family services division, and the school safety, division.
  • The Internal affairs bureau handles complaints against staff.
  • The Information Technology Division has all IT related applications for the department.
