Chino State Prison Information
The Chino state prison actually refers to the California Institution for Men, which is located in Chino a small city in the San Bernardino County, of the state of California. This is an all men’s prison that was opened in the year 1941. The California Institution for Men is sometimes referred to as Chino state prison, just Chino, Chino Men’s or Men’s. This facility is maintained under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It was the fourth state to be built in California, after the construction of San Quentin State Prison, California Institution of Women in Tehachapi and Folsom State Prison.
Sometimes the California institute of Women can also be referred to as a Chino state prison. Since 2003 after the annexation of the land area of the prison by Chino, the women’s prison is also technically in the Chino city. The prison is just one hour away from Downtown LA. The death row women convicts of California are still held in this correctional facility.

About the Warden:
The new warden Mona D. Houston was appointed in July 2019. Before transitioning to Correctional Health Services administration she worked as the government account’s clerk. She became the Associate Warden in 2016 and was then promoted to her current position recently. She is also involved with the California Institution for Women as the Associate Warden. She also holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Accounting and Science.
Number of Inmates:
Around 3600 inmates are serving their prison sentence in California Institution for Men. The official capacity of the prison is 2700. The occupancy rate is about 120%. The annual budget of the prison is $232.2 million.
It was the first minimum security level to be opened in California. Presently the security level of the prison is minimum to maximum divided into different facilities.
The California Institution for Men provides various programs that strive to help and benefit the prison population upon being released.
Some of the Educational Programs are as follows:
- Adult Basic Education – this is for the prisoners who lack the basic level of education. Some of them are basically illiterate.
- Adult Basic Education Level II and III – Made for the inmates who wish to develop particular skills or get some vocational training in any field.
- Adult Basic Education Premier – this educates the prisoners on proper subjects like political science, language, mathematics, etc. Also helps the inmates to appear for GED.
- For inmates who speak in a different language, they are enrolled in English language classes to learn English as a second language.
There are some self-help programs that help rehabilitate the prisoners back into the community and society. One such is the Substance Abuse Program, where more than 150 inmates are enrolled. This group is especially for those who need special medical attention.
