Chuckawalla Valley State Prison was opened in December 1988 and is located in Riverside County, California in an area of 1,700 acres. Chuckawalla prison adjoins the Ironwood State Prison. It is a level 2 prison, which is a Medium Security Correctional Facility.

Chuckawalla Valley State Prison Number of Inmates
The Chuckawalla Valley state prison was constructed with a capacity to house 1,738 inmates. The prison is overcapacity and the number of inmates housed in the prison, as on March 2019 is 2,755.
There are eleven buildings built in the open dormitory-style. Each unit has 340 beds. Apart from this, a Level 1 Ward is also available that a housing capacity of 200 beds each in 2 buildings. There is also a segregation unit meant to house offenders who commit severe infringement of rules. This unit has 100 cells with two beds each.
The prison has been designated as special needs and mostly house sex offenders, former law officials, and dropouts from gangs. This is an open prison system, where inmates need to be present in their living area only at night and during count times.
Chuckawalla Valley State Prison Visitation Hours
Chuckawalla state prison is a part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). The visitation hours and procedures are common to all the prisons in the state. Visitation to the prison is possible on all Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The visitation hours are from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm or from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
