Desoto Annex is a state prison in Arcadia, Desoto County in Florida. The prison only houses male inmates and is owned and managed by the Florida Department of Corrections. The prison facility has a minimum, medium, and close offenders as well as adult offenders. The prison has a total capacity to house 1453 prisoners.
Desoto Annex History
Desoto Annex was established in 1996 and initially served as an extension of the original Desoto facility. The prison was at first made for both male and female inmates, but the female inmates were later shifted to a separate prison. Desoto Annex is one of the most famous and oldest prisons in Florida.
There are four cell blocks in the prison, a central health care service block, a maximum-security block, a medium-security block, and a minimum-security firehouse. The prison is completely walled and happens to be the only prison in Florida to contain a gas chamber and death row for inmates.
Desoto Annex Inmate Programs
Desoto Annex offers many programs to inmates. There are also some mental health services available to the prisoners. Desoto Annex also offers vocational courses in carpentry, masonry, and welding. The prison also runs computer training courses and special courses like yoga, victim awareness, journaling, and religious studies. In addition to this, the prisons can take up jobs within the prison.
The facility also works with a local organization to provide family liaison services to help inmates and their families with reintegration programs after their release.
Desoto Annex Visiting Hours
Visitors need to register before meeting the prisoners. On the day of the visit, you need to reach the parking lot by 7:30 AM. The registration starts at 8:15 AM and goes up to 2 PM. Visitors are not permitted to register post 2 PM. Here are the visiting hours:

- Sunday: 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM
Desoto Annex Mail and Visitation Rules
Only people with an up to date identity proof are allowed in the prison. You must not have any felony charges against you. For visitors below the age of 16, it is important to be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian. You also must register and make sure that your name is on the visitation list before you enter the prison. You can contact the prison facility before coming to make sure that they have your name and details on the list.
You must dress appropriately and not be clothed in provocative clothes. Your clothes cannot represent offensive messages, language, or images. You cannot wear transparent or tight clothes. Your clothes must also not match the prison uniform that is orange in color. Army greens, fatigues, camouflage prints, and blue denim are also not allowed.
Visitors are advised to leave their hats, caps, and scarves in their cars. You must also check if the inmate you wish to see is allowed visitation. Not all inmates have visitation rights and some may only qualify for a visit with a partition in between.
