Oregon Federal Correctional Institution Profile and Valuable Information

The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) is a medium-security federal prison in the state of Oregon. It is located in Sheridan and also includes a detention center (FDC) and a smaller minimum-security satellite prison camp. The prison houses adult male offenders. It is managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The current capacity of the prison is 1755, of which 1234 inmates are held at the FCI and FDC and 521 at the camp.

FCI Sheridan history can be traced back to May 1981 when Sheridan first emerged as the possible site of the first federal prison in Oregon. The construction of the prison began in 1987. The construction plan involved making a main prison portion with a capacity of 550 inmates and an adjacent camp to hold 256 inmates. The facility opened in May 1989. It was built by Portland’s Hoffman Construction Company and cost $52 million.

Every housing unit has a telephone room. Inmates can make outbound calls from 06:00 AM to 03:30 PM. A call cannot exceed 15 minutes. Each inmate is allowed to have 300 minutes of calling time in a month.

A diverse range of programs is made available at the FCI for the benefit of the inmates.

GED is mandatory for all the prisoners who do not have documentation to prove their high school education. There is a Counselling Program for inmates who have faced sexual abuse in the past. There are Residential and Non Residential Drug Abuse programs as well as a separate Drug education program.

Other programs include English as a Second Language, Adult Continuing Education Course, Parenting Program, Advance Occupation Education ACollege program, Correspondence Program, Vocational Training Program, Scholarship Program, and Apprenticeship Program.

Visitors are allowed on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 08:30 AM to 03:00 PM.

Prisons held in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) may have a separate visiting schedule. Visitors are required to contact the facility for the schedule prior to the visit.
