Greensville Correctional Center history

The overcrowding of the Virginia correctional system necessitated the opening of the Greensville Correctional Center in September 1990. The execution chamber of the Commonwealth of Virginia for capital punishment was shifted here in April 1991.

The institution was initially classified as a maximum-security center and after the opening of various high-risk facilities in the neighborhood was later lowered to medium-security; a minimum-security work camp to house low-risk inmates was constructed in 1995. Since the opening, the death chamber has executed 111 prisoners either by electrocution or injection.

Greensville Correctional Center Inmate Programs

Once assigned to the facility, inmates have access to a variety of Greensville Correctional Center inmate programs. The aim of these programs is to help them develop healthy attitudes towards others and acquire skills that facilitate easy integration into society on release.

A treatment counselor develops a dedicated plan after analyzing individual needs. Treatment programs include therapeutic care, work, and education programs as well as mental health services. Apart from these, inmates also have access to religious services, recreational programs, and individual counseling services to encourage them to go back to a productive life.
