Jess Dunn Correctional Center is a minimum-security. This prison is in Taft, Oklahoma. It can house over 1,100 male inmates.

Jess Dunn Correction Center History

Jess Dunn Correctional Center was built in 1932. It was used as a mental hospital where African-American patients were treated. After that, the center was used as a tuberculosis sanitarium. Following that it was used as a juvenile facility for girls. Then it was used as a co-ed home.

In 1980, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services handed control of the center to the Oklahoma Department of Correction. The Oklahoma Department of Correction decided to name the facility after Jess Dunn. Jess Dunn worked in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary as a warden from 1938 to 1941. In 1941 there was both an inmate escape attempt and shootout. Jess Dunn died during that escape attempt and shootout.

The center had used inmate labor to build a new 42-bed segregated housing unit in 2000.
