Kate Barnard Community Corrections Center Profile and Valuable Information

Kate Barnard Community Corrections Center History

KBCC or Kate Barnard Correctional Center has been named for Charities and Corrections’ first commissioner of Oklahoma. It is a correctional facility for female inmates only who require minimum security. Kate Barnard Correctional Facility is situated at a stone’s throw from the administrative building of ODOC in Oklahoma City’s North Martin Luther King Avenue. The location of this corrections center has been home to other facilities like Mabel Bassett Correctional Center and Hillside Community Corrections Center.

The facility was initially called the Kate Barnard Community Treatment Center and served as a prison for men offenders. However, the ODOC transformed it into a woman’s facility at the educational level in 1992. The prisoners were shifted to Hillside by ODOC in 2012 prior to being renamed as Kate Barnard Correctional Center. The all-female minimum-security correctional facility has a maximum capacity of 260 women inmates.

Kate Barnard Community Corrections Center inmate programs

The correctional facility in Oklahoma provides a special work release program for a maximum of 60 prisoners. It is a unique program that enables the prisoners to leave the prison and get employment in the nearby community. They must report back to the correction center when their shifts end. It is a program that prepares a prisoner to reenter into mainstream society by giving them greater responsibility and freedom.

More than 25 percent of the Kate Barnard Community Corrections Center’s prisoners are serving sentences for drug-related offenses. It is precisely the reason why the reentry program organized here puts emphasis on the substance abuse treatment program. Some other inmate programs conducted here are as follows:

1. Education

Several prisoners are not educated, which is a major component to avoid serving imprisonment alone. The correctional center provides various literacy programs and diplomas that are equivalent to Pre-High School and High-School.

2. Criminal Thinking

The correction center offers a treatment program called Change Moral Reconation Therapy to address judgment errors, thinking, and relationships associated with criminal behavior/thinking.

3. Substance Abuse Treatment

If any prisoner requires substance abuse treatment, the facility teaches them how to avoid the use of alcohol and drugs. The facility also helps then to develop coping, emotional, social, and cognitive skills required for avoiding using these substances.
