Lee Arrendale State Prison Information

The Lee Arrendale State Prison located in Georgia is a part of the Habersham County was named in honor of Lee Arrendale, former Chairman of the Georgia Board of Corrections. The prison was once ranked the second most violent prison in the state. It came under scrutiny for failing to provide inmate security after one inmate was strangled to death in February 2004.

In early 2005, it became an exclusive women’s prison and houses the state death row for women. Lee Arrendale state prison is the first prison where inmates are a part of the fire department. It is the state’s first all-women inmate fire department supervised by the Georgia Department of Corrections' POST-certified employee. Inmates are carefully selected, trained and certified by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council, to be a part of the fire department in accordance with Georgia law.
