Sending mail to the inmates, like other endeavors, is bound by several inflexible rules. As the inmate mail is closely monitored by prison staff, it is recommended to send mail in a simple envelope with ordinary paper. It is also necessary to keep the mail simple by just including things like photos of family and friends. Fancy stuff such as greeting cards with electronics/music, stickers, and inappropriate pictures are also to be avoided.
You also have the convenience of sending a package through the Georgia Inmate Package Program, but you can’t send a homemade package. At the cost of 1-3 stamps each, you can also send and receive videograms and emails through JPay.
Similar to these rules, there are also some well-thought-out rules for visiting an inmate. After filling out an application and getting clearance from the Georgia Department of Correction, you are free to visit the inmate at the facility carrying nothing more than an identification card, car keys, and a maximum of 20 dollars for the vending machines.
You will be subjected to a search by electronic surveillance instruments before entering the facility. It is also important to note that electronic devices and outside food are not permitted in the waiting area. The authorities are also authorized to check if the visitors are wearing appropriate clothes and shoes at all times. As a rule of thumb, you should avoid suggestive or revealing clothes.
At Long Unit, you are also given the liberty of video visits through JPay; you can have a half-hour session for $3.95.
