The North Kern state prison has a capacity of 2,694 inmates. At present, the prison functions at over capacity and houses only male prisoners. As of March 2019, there were 4,148 inmates housed at the prison.

The prison has a reception center to house prisoners to be transferred to other prisons after 90 days. It has a medium security general population unit. There is also a minimum support unit in the prison. There are two razor fences with an electric fence for perimeter security.

Visitation to North Kern state prison is governed by the common guidelines of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

Visitation hours to the prison are on all Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Visitation hours are from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm or 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
