The New Mexico Women's Correctional Facility was opened in 1989 as the first privatized prison for women in the United States. It had an initial capacity of 611 inmates which has since been expanded to 744 inmates. In 2015, officials of the New Mexico Department of Corrections decided to move out all the female inmates and instead consolidate all of New Mexico's convicted sex offenders, at that time numbering 1,200 at the facility.
The prison has always operated by CoreCivic, the second-largest private corrections and prison company in the United States. Earlier known as the Corrections Corporation of America, it rebranded itself as CoreCivic in 2016 after it got embroiled in controversies related to hiring inadequate staff, lobbying and skimping on the money.
