The facility provides shelter 1,200 detainees. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carry out the detention process. On clearance of immigration or citizenship status, the authorities of the facility will set the detainees free. This center is also housed with repatriated immigrants. Port Isabel Detention Center was built in 1950 and an additional structure erected in 2007. The facility provides shelter to 1,200 detainees. Port Isabel admits around 9,500 detainees per year. Vigorous training is given to unarmed and armed guards. Training for Unarmed guards is 67 hours and Armed guards receive additional eight hours of training in the usage of firearms. This center provides two hot meals and one cold meal a day to all the detainees. Photocopy of outgoing mails is mandatory at Port Isabel Detention Center.

Port Isabel Detention Center Inmate Programs

Port Isabel Detention Center has a tie-up with many educational institutions. These institutions provide valuable programs to inmates. Programs relating to mathematics, electrical engineering, business management, administrative and general studies. At the Port Isabel Detention Center, inmates are encouraged to learn skills during their free time. Jobs with stipend are also offered to the inmates. Vocational training at this facility includes soldering, housekeeping, plumbing, construction and electrical trades, computer skills, desktop publishing, wind technology, and Eco-friendly building technologies. Visitation Rules:

  • Visitors need to be present 45 minutes in advance to the scheduled visits.
  • All visits last up to 60 minutes.
