Situated in Sullivan County, Fallsburg in the state of New York, Sullivan Correctional Facility is a maximum security jail. The prison has a maximum housing capacity of 580 adult males. More than 80 percent of the inmates in this facility are serving sentences for the commission of violent criminal offenses and more than 50 percent of the prisoners here are on life sentences. Sullivan Correctional facility features a behavioral health unit of its own, as well as, a special needs unit.
David Berkowitz is one of the most notorious prisoners housed at this facility. Berkowitz served his prison term here for the infamous serial killings nicknamed as “Son of Sam” that he committed in the year 1977.
The New York Department of Correctional Services runs this correctional facility located on a 3.4 km of a square stretch of land, which also constitutes a medium-security prison called Woodbourne Correctional Facility. The state of New York gathered funds for this correctional facility after losing another state facility called Rikers Island in 1980. The New York State Department of Correctional Services bought a hotel called the Lebowitz Pine View to construct access roads to this facility, which was the adjoining property.
