The Wilcox State Prison is a correctional reform facility run by the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC). The GDC is one of the largest correctional services provider in the US and most reputable in the state of Georgia. Their mission is to run the Wilcox State Prison effectively and judiciously as a facility to house offenders and criminals, keeping Abbeville safe from further law infringements.

Wilcox State Prison Warden Information

Shawn Emmons is the current Warden at Wilcox State Prison, as appointed by the GDC Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. Emmons, like many other wardens, began his career as Correctional Officer. He then went on to serve as an Offender Rehabilitation Counselor and Chief Counselor. Emmons also worked as Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment, before being promoted to the position of Warden. He has previously worked at Valdosta State Prison and Johnson State Prison. He is well equipped for the responsibility he has been given by the GDC – he possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and has also participated in various law enforcement training programs. Some of these programs are – Advanced Management Training, PREA Compliance Training, Re-entry Specialist Training and so on.

Institutional Programs

Academic Programs

Wilcox State Prisoners can enjoy the following academic training programs – Literacy and Remedial Reading, English as a Second Language, General Education Diploma and Adult Basic Education. Literacy training is given to inmates with absolutely no literacy skills. English as a Second Language is beneficial for immigrant prison inmates. The diploma for General Education is offered for inmates who are interested to pursue or restart their education despite their incarceration. The Adult Basic Education Program aims to provide inmates with basic knowledge and education on primary subjects.

Other Programs

Vocational training programs for Teacher Aide, Laundry, Food Preparation, Barber and Warehouseman is made available by the prison facility. Worship and counseling services are also offered. An inmate can also unwind by participating in the General Recreation program.
