Crystal Lake Illinois Overview and Crime Rate Statistics
Crystal Lake is a city in the McHenry County in the state of Illinois. It is 45 miles from Chicago is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city is named after the lake which is situated around 1.6 miles southwest from the city’s downtown.
The city initially originated in the 1800s in two separate communities. The two communities were known as Nunda and Crystal Lake. The city was initially known as Crystal Ville which was changed to Crystal Lake before 1840. The city is famous for its Teco pottery which followed due to the establishment of the American Terra Cotta Tile and Ceramics Company was founded in 1881. A lot of the buildings in the city use architectural glazed terracotta tiles in their structure which includes the high school, theaters, and various other company buildings and stores.
In the last 20 years or so, Crystal Lake has mainly grown in suburban areas with the increase in the population. Three high schools have been opened in the city to manage the growing number of children. Some of the major problems faced by the city include a sudden spike in immigration and poorly designed road systems. The standards of education and quality of life remain high in the city. The city also happens to be the place where the tradition of giving gold coins to the Salvation Army took root in 1982.

Crystal Lake is a peaceful area with safe suburbs where the number of all kinds of crime is significantly lower than the national average. However, there have been reports that several areas in McHenry County have experienced a slight increase in their violent crimes from the year 2016 to 2017, according to reports from the FBI.
The local police have reported that new resources and efforts are being directed to curb the rise in the tide of violent crimes. FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program keeps track of law enforcement agencies and incidents of violent crimes such as homicide, robbery, rape, and aggravated assault. The data for the year 2018 is yet to be released. 11 McHenry municipalities have been associated with homicide in 2017 which includes Harvard, Spring Grove, Lake in the Hills and Woodstock.
Compared with 2016, Crystal Lake received 2 to 9 more complaints about violent crimes in 2017. A particular raised the city's homicide rate from 0 to 2 in one year. On August 3rd police responded to a report of a woman armed with a knife. When the police arrived at the scene, a man with a handgun was also found. The authorities found the bodies of two sisters who were dead due to multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the police, the man had shot the sisters multiple times with other children being present in the house. The suspect has been arrested although he has not pleaded guilty to first-degree murder charges and currently awaits trial at the McHenry County.
The local police at Crystal Lake keep tabs on various kinds of crime patterns and work with other government authorities to promote awareness and safety. As of 30th December 2018, there were 30 registered sex offenders in the city of Crystal Lake, and the ratio of the number of Crystal Lake residents to sex offenders stand at 1,344 to 1. This ratio of the number of citizens to the registered sex offenders is quite less than the national average. Crystal Lake thus stands as one of the safest cities in the state of Illinois with very low rates of violent crime.
