Lake County seems to be well on its way to match the last year’s record of 19 homicides. BY the end of June last year there were about nine murders and even this year June there have already been nine murders committed. The figures are shocking because as of 2016, the number of homicides was only 6. So when it hit 19 in 2017, it was an increase by 216.7%.

The number of cases dropped from 146,929 to 85,558 as per the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. However, the population of Florida during this time increased by 39.2%.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the crime, murder statistics are harder to predict or analyze. Before the year 2017, the highest reported number of murders by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was 14 in the year 2001. In 2003 there was only one reported murder in the state. From 1997 to 2017 there have been a total of 182 murders which averages out to about nine murders per year. Most of the victims in these cases were killed by someone they know. Some of the very common examples are lover’s quarrel, murder-suicide, disputes among friends and partners and others.


Lake County has seen a steady rise drug-related crimes over the last few years. There are almost daily reports of arrests being made from police busting cars with substances such as methamphetamine, crack cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. Quite often there are homicides associated with drug cases like this. In the year 2015, there a total of 868 major form of violent crimes and 8,502 major property crimes. From a per capita point of view, Lake County ranked 208th in the overall list for violent crimes and 161st in the list for property crimes.

Late 2018 saw the further rise of crime with assaults on police officers, armed robberies in Grayslake area and a murder in a domestic dispute in November itself. This is indicative of this year having recorded high rates of violent crime. From 2010 till 2017 there has on an average been a steady rise in the number of violent crimes in Lake County. While in 2010 the number hovered around 300 to 400, by 2015 it had reached more than 800. One of the most disturbing figures is those of rape. From 2011 onwards the figures have seen a sharp rise with 2015 witnessing around 130 cases. Aggravated assault also climbed to over 500 cases from just 250 in between 2010 and 2015.
