During his rookie season, he broke several NFL records for rushing yards and passing. He also became the first quarterback rookie to throw 4,000 yards in a season.
Newton went to Westlake for his high school in Georgia. There, he played for the football team Westlake Lions. At his age of 16 years as a junior, he made 23 touchdowns, passed 2,500 yards, along with 9 touchdowns and running 638 yards, which gained him traction from notable college programs.
As a senior, he was given a 5-star by RIvals.com with ranking second as the dual-threat quarterback and a 28th overall player. He received several scholarships from colleges including Georgia, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Florida.
He chose Florida at the starting of his senior year and became among the country’s top-rated class of recruiting in 2007.
As a freshman at the University of Florida, Newton played for the football team Florida Gators from 2007-08. In 2007, he played 5 games with 40 yards passing and rushing sixteen times for 103 yards with 3 touchdowns.
In his sophomore year, in 2008, Newton played against Hawaii but took an injury.
He was suspended from the team, but all charges against him were dropped. Three months later, in January of 2009, Newton was transferred to Blinn College in Texas.
He was ranked no.1 quarterback from high school and junior college by the Rivals.com, with him being the only 5-star recruit. He later signed with Auburn Tigers.
In 2010, he played the first game in Auburn University and made a home win on the 4th of September, 2010. He made 186 passing yards, with 171 rushing yards and 5 offensive touchdowns.
Weeks later, he made a second break-out match with 158 passing yards, ran 176 yards, and 5 touchdowns for a victory against South Carolina.
On the 2nd of October, Newton led his team for a victory against Louisiana-Monroe. Against Kentucky, on the 9th of October, Newton made a victory of 37-34.
During the game with Arkansas, he ran 188 yards along with 3 rushing touchdowns and 1touchdown pass. After all his performance, he was listed among top-5 candidates to view for Heisman Trophy.
On the 30th of November, Auburn declared Cecil Newton to be ineligible due to the evidence found by the NCCA that he solicited Mississippi State for $120,000 to $180,000 for Newton’s service. But soon, Auburn reinstated Newton because he was unaware of this.
After 13 months of investigation, the NCAA closed this case, unable to find any proper evidence. The investigation consisted of more than fifty interviews with several reviewing of bank accounts, telephone records, emails, and IRS documents. But they found no solid evidence that would show Auburn’s participation in this scenario.
In January 2011, Newton started working out in San Diego. In April, he was recruited by Carolina Panthers in the NFL Draft of 2011.
During the lockout of NFL 2011, he spent nearly 12 hours per day at IMG Madden, training with Chris Weinke. Newton is a Christian by faith and graduated with a degree in sociology from Auburn.
