Gloria Stuart was an American actress, Bonsai master, and visual artist. She is known for her acting in the silent movies and has been one of the leading names for her generation. Subsequently, she worked in theater and then gave up acting and involved herself in visual arts. She has produced many art collections in an artistic career spanning thirty years. She returned to acting in the 70s and acted in minor roles.
She gained international fame when she acted in the movie Titanic as the older Rose. Her performance helped bring attention to her previous work. She has been involved in activism throughout her career.
Gloria Frances Stuart was born as Gloria Stewart in Santa Monica in California. She was born on 4th July 1910. Her father was Frank Stewart who was an attorney. Her mother was Alice Deidrick. Her father died when she was nine and her mother remarried. Stuart was married twice in her lifetime to Blair Gordon Newell whom she divorced and to Arthur Sheekman. She had a daughter. Gloria Stuart died at the age of 100 in 2010.
Gloria Stuart started her career in the theater and acted in many plays. Interestingly, she cleared screen tests of both Paramount and Universal and they flipped a coin and as a result, she signed a contract with Universal. The Cohens and Kellys in Hollywood was her first screen appearance in 1932.
The Old Dark House in 1932, was one of the films in which she was noticed and won appreciation. Some of her popular movies were The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, Poor Little Rich Girl, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. In the 40s, she reduced her film work and starred focusing more on theater.
She gave up acting in 1945 and was involved in visual arts. She was involved in Bonsai, painting, and other designs and produced many collections. She returned to acting in 1975 in The Legend of Lizzie Borden. She acted in minor roles. In 1996, she acted as the 101-year-old Rose Dawson in Titanic and won universal acclaim. She acted in a couple of movies after that. Her last on-screen appearance was in Land of Plenty (2004).
Gloria Stuart married a sculptor Blair Gordon Newell in 1930, at the age of 20. He was not comfortable with her Hollywood career and they divorced in 1934. She then married writer Arthur Sheekman in 1934. They had a daughter Sylvia, who is an acclaimed chef and writer of books on food. Stuart remained with Sheekman until his death in 1978. It was rumored that Stuart had relationships with actors Justin Mitchell and Kerry Johnson.
Gloria Stuart died at the age of 100, on 26th September 2010. She died of respiratory failure that had come about as a result of her being affected by lung cancer. At the time of her death, she had a daughter, four grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. She was an activist who worked for the environment throughout her life.

Gloria Stuart has the distinction of being the oldest person to be nominated for the Academy Awards. She was nominated at the age of 86 for her role in Titanic. Gloria Stuart’s awards were won for her acting in Titanic. She received the Screen Actors Guild award, Saturn Award, Online Film Critic’s Society Award, and Kansas City Film Critic’s Circle Award. She won an Eyegore award in 2000. The Screen Actors Guild honored her with the Ralph Morgan Award in 2010.
