Jerry Rice Celebrity Life
Born on 13th October 1962, Jerry Rice is a former professional soccer player in the United States of America. He played at the National Football League or NFL and was mostly associated with the San Francisco 49ers.
He has bagged innumerable accolades, accomplishments, and records that have made him one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL.
He has been the career leader in many of the statistical categories thanks to his consistently brilliant performances on the field. Rice has also scored more points as compared to all other non-kickers in the history of NFL with 1, 254. He was chosen for 13 times to the Pro Bowl.
Rice also bagged 3 Super Bowls while being associated with the 49ers, as well as, when he was with the Oakland Raiders. Until the year 2017, the former player is the holder of more than NFL records. It is the maximum number of records held by any player in the NFL.
According to The Sporting News, Rice was declared to be second trailing behind Jim Brown in 1999 on the list of 100 greatest football players. The NFL Films production of the NFL Networks chose him in the list of the top one hundred greatest players of NFL as the greatest football player in the history of NFL.
In 2010, his name was included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His name also featured on the 2007 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
Childhood and Early Years
Born in Mississippi’s Starkville, Jerry Rice was brought up in a town called Crawford. His father was a black mason and he studied at the B.L. Moor High School in Mississippi. He mentioned in his autobiography that his mother was not willing to let him be a part of the school soccer team when he was a freshman.
The principal of his school caught him being truant when he was a sophomore. The player ran away extremely fast and the principal discussed his student’s speed with the football coach of the school. Rice was offered a place in the school team.
During the years 1981 to 1984, Rice studied at the Mississippi Valley State University. He was fondly referred to as “World” because of his incredible talent to catch practically anything that came near him. The school authorities renamed its soccer stadium as Rice-Totten Stadium from Magnolia Stadium to honor its players Totten and Rice. On 12th August 2006.
Success at NFL
The San Francisco 49ers chose Rice in the NFL draft of 1985 as the sixteenth overall pick. It was a mixed year for this player whose start was slow and yet gained momentum towards the end of the year.
However, the 2nd playing season was undoubtedly the breakout season for him. He paired with Joe Montana, the veteran quarterback and managed 86 catches that included 1570 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.
His performance in the season of 1987 surpassed that of the preceding season. He was declared the Player of the Year and created a new record in the league with twenty-three touchdowns.
The season of 1988 haw Rice leading his team 49ers at the Super Bowl. He was declared as the MVP of the game and caught eleven passes.
Rice was known for his extraordinary fitness level and played an unmatched 20 National Football League seasons and took retirement from the game in 2004. A major part of his career was associated with the 49ers jersey. However, he was also a member of other teams like Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders.
