Luka Šamanić is a basketball player who was born in Zagreb, Croatia on January 9, 2000. He plays and represents the Austin Spurs, on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA (National Basketball Association).
Samanic’s Early Life
Samanic’s father, Marco Samanic, was a professional basketball player as well. He had a solid European career that lasted for about 19 years. Because of this, Luka relocated and lived in multiple countries during the early years of his life. While growing up, Luke was interested and involved in several sports such as soccer and tennis.
He only started playing basketball when he was eleven years old and he credits soccer for enhancing his coordination as a professional player of basketball.
Samanic’s career in basketball started with a local club in Zagreb, at the youth level. In a match conducted on 22 November 2014, Samanic collected 29 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks for Zagreb against the junior team representing Šanac Karlovac.
After taking part in many basketball games, on January 3, 2016, he guided his team to a championship victory played against Virtus Roma in a tournament conducted in Italy.
Samanic was rewarded with the most valuable player (MVP) honor for this. After his double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds in a blowout of Cibona junior squad on the 29th of May, he was titled MVP for the Croatian cadet championship.
In June of 21016, Samanic attended a 3-day pre-NBA draft camp in Italy, following which he signed a two-year contract (amateur)with FC Barcelona. In the 2016-2017 Adidas Next Generation Tournament final, he averaged 8.7 points, six rebounds & 0.7 assists in 3 games, for which he was rewarded with “Rising Star Trophy.”
In LEB Gold 2017-2018 season, he played 22 games, averaging 5.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in 12 minutes. In the Ciutat de L'Hospitalet qualifiers of the 2017–2018 Adidas Next Generation Tournament, Samanic joined Barcelona. He emerged by posting 27 points, 16 rebounds, 3 blocks and was titled L'Hospitalet tournament MVP and gained All-Tournament Team honors. He also participated in the Basketball Without Borders camp held in LA in 2018.
Samanic signed a professional multi-year contract with renowned Petrol Olimpija of the Slovenian League as well as the ABA League in May 2018. Recording 2 points and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes, he made a debut for Olimpija in an 86–60 loss against the Crvena Zvezda in the ABA League Supercup in October 2018.
Later, in a game against Šenčur in the Slovenian League, he made a record of season-high score of 22 points and eleven rebounds in a whopping 85–73 victory.
Here, he got an opportunity to learn from players like Domen Lorbek and Scottie Reynolds. Overall, after joining Petrol Olimpija, Samanic played 21 games in the Adriatic League, 12 in the Basketball Champions League and 16 games in the Slovenian Telemach League. Petrol Olimpija declared his departure late in June 2019.
Samanic announced that he will be entering the 2019 NBA draft in April 2019. With an overall number of 77 participants (including Samanic), he entered the 2019 NBA Draft Combine. Samanic formally signed with the well-known Spurs on July 1, 2019. He received his first assignment, which was to the Austin Spurs in October 2019.
A Career in National team
Samanic has already taken part in 3 international games with Croatia. He first played in the U16 European championship (Division A) and scored 17.7 points and 10.4 rebounds in 7 games.
He completed U18 European championship (Division B) scoring 13.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in 8 games, in 2017. Later in 2018, in the U18 European championship (Division A), Samanic averaged 6.6 rebounds and 14.5 points.
